What you need (and might want) to know about the world wide web
A web host is a company that has computers that are hooked up to the internet 24/7. These computers are called servers. It is on these servers that all your web files are stored, be they HTML files (web pages), graphic files etc.
The World Wide Web, is a system of interlinked hypertext documents contained on the Internet. With a web browser, one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them by using hyperlinks.
I am 100% down with web guru Jakob Nielsen's assertion that "Flash is 99% bad. It was true in 2000 and it is still so in 2010. If ultra-cool Apple and mega-sized Google give short shrift to Flash then why should you in the absence of any compelling reason(s)?
Use sparingly unless your site's purpose - displaying/selling products. Obviously an artist's site is going to have a lot of photos as will an online retail store. Images slow the downloading of pages and that is the kiss of death for all too many sites. The graphics that should probably be most important to website owners (as opposed to web designers) is their charts showing the statistics - how many people are visiting their sites, their behaviour once they are there.
